The two methods are to get the right agent, editor, publisher lined up behind you and have them all work together with plenty of lead time to find close to 100% of the audience for well-realized beautiful stories.

I felt like his central idea was more "write for the sake of it and grow in your craft because little is controllable" vs. "writing better leads to commercial success." That being said, your take on the marketplace feels very accurate.

I'd hope so, but I always find "write better" to not mean much when it comes to influencing things like public or critical reception.
