  2. Naval officers seized the Amistad. The African men were charged with piracy & murder, but the US Supreme Court ultimately ordered them to be freed, as they had been illegally transported and held as slaves and had rebelled in self-defense:

  3. Before the Amistad arrived at its first destination, several of the captives took control of the ship, killed many members of the crew, and ordered survivors to sail the ship to Africa. The crew secretly changed course, maneuvering the ship north to Long Island.
