If you work with young people, encourage them to engage in local health services, no matter their background. From hospital boards, local volunteering opportunities and focus groups. They have an important voice, please support them to use it! 🗣

Thanks for sharing Luke. I’m sorry you had to go through such a hard time. Mental health problems after physical trauma is unfortunately so common 💖

Although not the big C I had anemia and infections including sepsis several time from a dead kidney, started to struggle mentally and them tablets helped no end!

Dealing with long-term mental health problems is a big reality for most young cancer patients (and cancer patients in general too, of course) You can feel like after treatment is finish, you are dropped back into the world, it’s overwhelming and hard to deal with!

My mental health after cancer has not been an easy ride. I naively thought the end of my treatment was it, but it was just the beginning. After therapy with Pyscho-oncology, which I was so fortunate to be able to access, I can finally say I’m almost recovered.

I explored with an Occupational Therapist the idea of it being related to my experience in Intensive Care, which I had a lot of flashbacks off. I was in an isolated room for a several days.

I started to panic being in enclosed spaces, and smelling certain smells (hand sanitizer or anything similar was a big trigger for me), as well as loud noises.

But, I never realised it was because of my cancer diagnosis. I kept on shrugging it off and putting it under the carpet, until I reached out for help.

I went back to university 3 weeks after my last chemotherapy session. Everything was great until a few months later when I started feeling very anxious about things that never used to impact me.
