  1. While I like to whine about the 2019 mushroom season (overall it sucked!), getting all these ceps was pretty sweet. They were growing all thru the month of September.

Our old trees, planted 20 years ago to conserve heritage fruit varieties, are now covered in different species of . Planting these trees has had such an impact on the diversity of the pasture - supporting a host of birds & insects who also spread wildflower seeds

Sadly for the lichen we also have small eye-catching candy-floss pink spots of a parasitic lichenicolous colonising a number of different lichen species across a few of the trees. Possibly Illosporiopsis christiansenii or Marchandiomyces corallinus. 🍄

Cheer up ppl it's ! And yes, it's a sad, tearful, remorseful farewell... to January can be tough, but take some time to appreciate the beautiful diversity of life around you and it won't matter what month it is!

Fomitopsis betulina or birch polypore. Most people say these are too bitter to eat.

🧐 This lichen looks like a Venus flytrap.

Missing in 2019, amanita jacksonii or American Caesar's Mushroom. I didn't find a single one. Pictures from 08/10/18.

The cool thing about lichens is, you can find them even in winter. It makes winter a little less depressing.

This looks like axil-bristle lichen (myelochroa galbina), but not sure.

Two for one, the first one might be bottlebrush lichen(?) 🧐 Cemeteries are a great place to find lichens.

Apart from the scientific aspects of lichen study, I am continually struck by their delicate almost abstract beauty, these, on the trunk of a beech tree, could easily be a map of two countries.
