Today is #BiodiversityDay! Or to give it it's full title: International Day for Biological Diversity #IDB2019
But what is biodiversity? And why do we care about it?

Biodiversity can change over time. The term 'global biodiversity' is used to refer to the variety of life on Earth as a whole, which has grown and shrunk as species have evolved and become extinct.

In the past, several ‘mass extinction’ events (including the one that marked the end of non-avian dinosaurs 65 million years ago) caused massive and sudden drops in global biodiversity.

Biodiversity is not distributed evenly; it can be higher or lower in different places. Tropical environments such as rainforests, are areas of high biodiversity. Though they cover less than 10% of the Earth's surface, they may harbour most of the world's species

Coral reefs are hotspots for marine biodiversity, thought to be home to a quarter of all marine species.

Whether a place’s biodiversity is high or low can tell us a lot about the health of its ecosystem: its community of living organisms, their habitat, and the ways in which they affect each other.

The rich variety of life on Earth is essential. Without biodiversity, ecosystems collapse, and we lose some of planet’s most incredible life, and environments. And if that's not enough, it also has profound effects on human health and wellbeing.

Our way of life relies on healthy ecosystems. Pollination, nutrient cycling, and air and water purification could all be affected if ecosystems collapse.

During the last century, we've observed alarming decreases in biodiversity. This month, a landmark report
@IPBES revealed that one million animals and plants are threatened with extinction: https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/news/2019/may/one-million-animals-and-plants-face-extinction.html …#GlobalAssessmentPrikaži ovu nit -
We’ve only lost a few percent of species so far, but extinction rates are already well above normal levels, and sure to accelerate rapidly unless something changes.pic.twitter.com/aOCVSx2fKb

And it is humanity that is to blame. Whether it's the way we use land, exploit different species, cause climate change, pollute or introduce invasive species, every ecosystem around the world is affected.pic.twitter.com/vnNs8fsQtR

Declining biodiversity means a real threat to the ecosystems we, along with all other species rely on. Biodiversity is vital for human health and well-being, but human impacts are now so great that we are eroding our own economies and food security.pic.twitter.com/symwcXDFuI

There are currently more than 2,500 conflicts over fossil fuels, water, food and land occurring worldwide. Loss of biodiversity is not only an environmental issue, but also a developmental, economic, security, social and moral one.pic.twitter.com/4lbrTNH6ko

The
@IPBES#GlobalAssessment report also tells us that it's not too late to make a difference, but only if we start now and transform our treatment of the natural world at every level.https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/news/2019/may/one-million-animals-and-plants-face-extinction.html …Prikaži ovu nit
