How big is the human genome? We barely fit 1/1000 of the human genome sequence typed out on a hallway wall near my office ! Take a look at the video and see what I mean...

I see a familiar name in this article! This project was led by Dr. David Schlessinger, whose group at Washington University worked with my lab to develop some of the first physical maps of human chromosomes. It was an exciting phase of the Human Genome Project!

Over the years, I’ve found that people have trouble imagining what three billion letters representing the human genome sequence actually look like -- so I decided to make it real! Let’s begin that journey...

One of the most surprising things that I learned while working in genomics was that most of the plants in a typical salad have more genes than do human! Here are the last of the 60 questions my staff asked me. I had a blast answering them and hope you enjoyed hearing my answers!

I am a very sentimental person and keep (way too much) memorabilia, including a ton of stuff from my childhood! I am grateful for our history program to help me stay organized collecting memorabilia at work. Here is the next clip from my staff asking me 60 questions!

Using polygenic risk scores to assess people’s genetic risk of developing diseases has received significant attention. has developed a new web resource about polygenic risk scores and why they are being studied as a tool for genomic medicine.

Exciting funding opportunity – nearly 300 human Mendelian disease genes have been identified each year of late. We need to maintain this momentum! Identifying such genes and causal variants will improve our understanding of disease and help the development of new therapies.
