“You can’t just oppose the president, you have to be for something.” What were Republicans for in 2010 & 2014? -Repeal Obamacare -Reverse Obama spending -Repeal Obamacare -Stop Obama’s executive action on immigration -Block Obama judicial nominations -Repeal Obamacare

It’s possible there’s a fundamental difference between what motivates the Democrat and Republican bases, how each party can win over independents, etc. But the “don’t run against Trump” crowd doesn’t make that argument. Just asserts it as if it’s obviously true.

A common error is to say Democrats can’t win midterms by running against Trump because Hillary ran against Trump and lost. But midterms aren’t presidential elections. And it’s harder to run against what someone might do as POTUS than against what a serving POTUS has done.

Midterms almost always come down to a referendum on the president, with the out party enjoying a motivation advantage. As @matthewjdowd points out, Dems’ last midterm victory came when they ran against Bush in 2006.https://twitter.com/matthewjdowd/status/997471802707316736?s=21 …

Sure Democrats, say what you’re for. If you have policy ideas, tell voters. But don’t uncritically accept the ahistoric conventional wisdom that running against the president hurts your chances. Especially when the president’s unpopular nationally and despised by your base. (END)

Democrats can & should run on our agenda: healthcare, etc (the should know what ppl want by now!) but also ADD anti-trump to it! We need to know candidates unequivocally do NOT support trump! We are tired of the corruption, stupidity & inhumanity of trump regime! @DNC

Dem candidates should go after Trump, but by specifically targetting the popular parts of his populist agenda that he has failed to deliver on. -He promised HIGHER taxes on the rich & lower deficits -He promised he would defeat ISIS in 30 days -He was going to REPLACE @Obamacare
