A common error is to say Democrats can’t win midterms by running against Trump because Hillary ran against Trump and lost. But midterms aren’t presidential elections. And it’s harder to run against what someone might do as POTUS than against what a serving POTUS has done.

Midterms almost always come down to a referendum on the president, with the out party enjoying a motivation advantage. As

Sure Democrats, say what you’re for. If you have policy ideas, tell voters. But don’t uncritically accept the ahistoric conventional wisdom that running against the president hurts your chances. Especially when the president’s unpopular nationally and despised by your base. (END)
