Only if you ignore Palestinian domestic politics. Hamas, like others international actors, is playing multiple games at once. Outside commentators, especially American ones, often make the mistake of assuming everything is about us.

I understand all that, and as far as I'm concerned I don't trust a single number that we've heard to this point. But I'm pretty sure that Ben's point is that if you were horrified by the death toll (as reported by Hamas) this new info (as reported by Hamas) should give you pause

I also approach Hamas public statements with a healthy skepticism. Those tweets in juxtaposition look a lot more like rejecting a source when it provides info that doesn't fit his preconceived narrative and citing the same source when it provides info that does.

That's the uncharitable view , and maybe it's correct. It often is. But the more charitable one is also plausible
