It undermines all the work the US has done for 75 years to build faith in the international system and in America's word as a signatory to the agreements it has entered. Taken with the pullout from the Paris Accord, TPP, threats re: alliances & NAFTA, it is a sign of US retreat.

You can't treat all of these things in a vacuum, sadly. This ain't my area; pulling out here might be totally justified. But it doesn't change the fact that it's part of a larger narrative of USA backing out of signed intl agreements.

Combine it with his attacks on the WTO, on NAFTA & other US FTAs, and it means the USA - at least in this admin - isn't a reliable signatory. Again, this one could be totally justified, but the broader pt remains valid IMO. Sadly.

And, finally, maybe US withdrawal here is still totally worth it! But that doesn't mean the other pt is invalid. Just outweighed by the need to withdraw.

This isn't a treaty, and he hasn't been pulling out of treaties, so the point is almost absurdly emptyheaded.

I'm confused - nobody said treaty (esp not me).

Changing to a related subject to avoid engaging your argument. Trump can legally renege, because JCPOA is not a treaty. But you didn't say he can't do it, just that it fits into a larger pattern of withdrawing from global engagement & leadership. But that's hard to argue against.

I wasn't avoiding engaging with Scott's argument, which he surely knows. The point is that there's a major difference when you have buy-in from the US Congress.

I'm not sure Congress would be willing to approve many international agreements if they can avoid it at all. Congressmen and Senators would rather let the president own it in case it doesn't work.

Which is to say, I expect most of these sort of deals to be of the Executive variety...and the world should know those have a shelf life of less than 8 years.

But if he cracks down on Chinese cheating (with the rest of the world) I’d would say that is engaging and showing leadership. I’m no protectionist.
