Netanyahu's big bombshell is... Iran lied about pursuing nuclear weapons in the past! That's it? Everyone's been operating under that assumption for years. I guess there's some value in proving what we already believe. But Israel hyped this as if Iran violated the nuclear deal.

Everyone assumed Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons--that's why so many countries imposed sanctions. If Iran wasn't pursuing nuclear weapons, there'd be no need for an agreement to get Iran to forfeit nuclear material. 2/x

Netanyahu and other Iran Deal critics act as if Iran Deal proponents think Iran is innocent and honest. But it's the opposite. Iran's aggression and dishonesty is why getting most enriched uranium out of Iran and destroying its one plutonium-producing reactor were important. 3/x

I thought Bibi would claim Iran has been secretly enriching uranium and working on nuclear weapons now, in violation of the JCPOA, which would dispute the IAEA's assessment. The fact that he didn't is the best evidence yet that Iran is actually fulfilling its obligations. 4/x

Netanyahu, like most Iran Deal critics, has never explained how freeing Iran from restrictions on its nuclear program would improve the situation. We can't go back in time and reject the JCPOA. Only option is to make the best of the current circumstances. 5/x

If the US reneges on the JCPOA without convincing evidence Iran violated the deal first, most of the world will be sympathetic to Iran. Europeans unlikely to reimpose sanctions, and there's no way Russia or China will. That means only options are a nuclear-armed Iran or war. 6/x

Unless Netanyahu is delusional enough to think Iran will capitulate if US breaks the deal--and I don't think he is--then he's trying to push US into bombing Iran. As I explain in this article, Saudi Arabia and the UAE appear to be doing that too. 7/xhttps://arcdigital.media/donald-trump-is-going-to-bomb-iran-5f29632fb25d …

Iran's role in the Middle East, US-Iran relations, and JCPOA are all complicated. But the choice is simple: If you want regional US-Israel-Sunnis war vs. Iran-Syria-Hezbollah (and maybe Russia), you should support US breaking the Iran Deal. If you don't, then you shouldn't. (END)

It's different. Bush claimed Iraq was actively pursuing nukes, in active violation of international law. Netanyahu claimed Iran pursued nukes in the past, and didn't make the case Iran is actively violating its obligations today. https://twitter.com/ImCaptObvious/status/991008209027690496 …
