BS. Really important to find out what happened at Benghazi. That's what the first investigations did. Gowdy led the 8th. Spent two years, $7 million, reached same conclusion as the others. The 8th investigation was about politics, not national security or truth. And you know it.https://twitter.com/jpodhoretz/status/985529551219552256 …

As someone who prioritizes national security/foreign policy and often gets annoyed by partisan politics, I found the later Benghazi investigations incredibly frustrating. Because something did go wrong. And it was important to analyze to prevent similar things in the future.

What the US really needed after Benghazi was a debate between "Fortress America" and diplomatic openness. Close off facilities to ensure safety? Or interact more with the community to deepen relationships despite risks? For the record, Amb. Christopher Stevens advocated openness.

Instead of safety v. openness debate and careful analysis of diplomatic security, we got conspiracy theories and obsession over Obama admin talking points Yes, they got it wrong at first. Corrected soon after. Shouldn't have said something until they knew, but not that big a deal

Even Republicans couldn't maintain the narrative that later Benghazi investigations were about national security. For example, Kevin McCarthy bragged on television that the investigations hurt Hillary Clinton's poll numbers. (Maybe don't say they quiet part loud)pic.twitter.com/hfWaGmupsB

Gowdy displays integrity when he insists Mueller must be allowed to finish and defends the rule of law. Maybe he's feeling nonpartisan since he's retiring. And maybe he feels a little guilty about running such a politicized investigation given what America's been through since.

The world's dangerous. Adversaries can be clever. Using protests as cover for a terrorist attack was smart, but now we're looking for it And there's a lot to criticize about Obama's Libya policy. But strategic analysis wasn't the main point of Gowdy's Benghazi investigation (END)
