Abortion is murder but shouldn't be punished. How to square that circle? We punish killing except in self-defense, war (mostly), and accident (sometimes). Abortion is none of those. "Murder" is the word for unjustified killing that must, in the name of justice, be punished. 1/x

Kevin Williamson saying women who get abortions should be hanged is ridiculous. But he's right that murder should be punished. I don't know Williamson's intentions, but he highlighted a contradiction in pro-life arguments. If abortion shouldn't be punished, it's not murder. (END)

The issue I see if abortion is murder, is that we as a society want to carve out an exception for rape & incest. This exception can't exist under the "Equal Protection" of the 14th Amend if we grant person status to fetuses. Fetuses are similarly situated, no exception for rape.
-
That adds to the contradictions with abortion = murder. A fetus is independent of the circumstances of its birth. A rape exception indicates it's not an entirely independent human being. Think of how this works with persons. If X rapes Y, Y is not then justified in murdering Z.
-
Exactly, if abortion is made illegal it has to be illegal in all situations, since the fetus is an innocent party. The difficulty is always weighing a women's rights vs a fetus she Carrie's. Not sure easy answers exist.
