Can't know for certain, of course. But yes, I think he truly doesn't understand this. He says it so often, and with such passion. I think he's convinced. Basically neo-mercantilism (but more instinctual than intellectual).

Do you think he just has backward ass ideas about tariffs? Because he has also said he'd issue tariffs over currency manipulation and tech theft. It's like he just wants to use this one tool.

Currency manipulation's worth fighting, but China isn't really doing it anymore. Intellectual property theft worth fighting. Not trade deficits Best guess: he sees tariffs as fighting tool. Like stiffing contractors and threatening to sue. Costs both money, but they'll fold first

I got the impression that the trade deficit is growing and not producing the results economists look for when defending trade deficits. Might the situation around our trade deficits actually be a problem?
