Perhaps more accurate to specify the Second Industrial Revolution, which began in the late 19th century, and included railroads, electricity, chemicals, fertilizer, oil, cars, planes, etc. Led to suburbs, mechanized warfare, consumerism, mass culture, and so much more. /2

In that sense, maybe it's more accurate to call this the Second Information Revolution, with the first including the inventions of radio and television, which created a mass media environment. But that went one way. This Information Revolution goes two ways. 3/

We don't really understand what it's doing to us as it's happening--2016 was the first real Information Revolution election--and we can only make some educated guesses as to where it's going (except that the feedback loop between tech and culture will keep changing society) (END)

I think it was more the internet, especially email, than social media per se. But you're right, it's been an ongoing transition rather than an abrupt break with the past. I'm referring to the media environment. For example, the way Twitter shapes the public political conversation
