Trump doing immense damage by failing to unequivocally support UK over Russian chemical attack. UK fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. Intel agencies fought Cold War together, and then War on Terror. Now UK, and the entire world, sees US not backing closest ally. They won't forget.

Here's what Trump said: "As soon as we get the facts straight, if we agree with them, we will condemn Russia or whoever it may be." That's bullshit. Total bullshit. 2/x

No way UK didn't share intelligence with US before Theresa May publicly accused Russia. If CIA or others disagreed, they would've raised objections, or presented alternative evidence. May going public indicates US intel agreed. Then why's Trump saying "if we agree with them"? 3/x

When America's closest ally says "Russia did it" and POTUS says "whoever it may be," it sends a signal: You're on your own "Whoever it may be" aims to cast doubt where the UK thinks there isn't any. (A rare nerve agent made in Russia controlled by Russian gov? Not a big leap) 4/x

I'm skeptical of "Trump's a Russian agent" theories, arguing that he's a useful idiot. But how usefully idiotic can one man be? Admitting Russia helped him win hurts Trump's ego. How would unequivocally backing the UK hurt him? What's the innocent (albeit stupid) explanation? 5/x

Worst part is, the damage is lasting. US and UK always have each other's back. Always. Even if Trump eventually does the right thing, every day he waits weakens that bond built over decades. And if he never does, it shows UK--and all US allies--they can't depend on America. 6/x

How can NATO members--especially in eastern Europe--watch this and think the US will honor its commitments to protect them from Russia? After seeing this, why would east Asian allies think it's smart to keep resisting Chinese influence because they can depend on America? 7/x

And what a slap in the face to the UK! This might be Trump's biggest mistake yet. Shows he clearly doesn't understand how important voluntary, reciprocal alliances are to US power. And none more than UK. Next time US needs help, they'll remember US wasn't there for them. (END)

Agree that Trump's refusal to link arms with UK against Russia is reverberating more powerfully, in the U.S. and abroad, than people yet realize. It crystallizes, for many, Trump's mysterious symbiosis w/ Russia.

Trump fully understands what he has done. His priority and biggest ally is Russia. No other country matters. He has proven that. He has also proven that he is a greedy fool
