"accepting a nuclear North Korea" is a non-starter, for reasons made obvious with the Syrian reactor destroyed by the IDF. If you want the crazy Iranian mullahs to have nukes, then accept NK nukes, otherwise, it will never be acceptable.

But Iran doesn't have nukes. North Korea does. Dealing with a nuclear-armed country is much different than dealing with one without nuclear weapons.
-
we don't know that Iran doesn't. (ie. Fordham, and why would they be testing missiles so often?). Russia and China are a bit different than N Korea. And NK has yet to demonstrate critical RV tech, however, the EMP threat is very real with the ability to orbit satellites
-
We're confident Iran doesn't have nuclear weapons. Intel agencies from many countries (US, UK, France, Germany, Israel, etc.) watch Iran closely. They're under the strictest international inspections of any country. Satellites and spy drones look down from above.
-
I'm not totally sure where that confidence comes from. The India-Pakistan nuke revelations weren't exactly predicted..

Great insights, as usual. It's probably no accident the editor called out "If Trump cannot win significant concessions, there’s no need to cut a deal." What are the chances he won't make a deal? He'll make one just so he can say he made one. This has the potential for disaster.
-
I'm wary of that too. But he's also lambasted previous presidents for cutting deals with North Korea, attacked the Iran deal, as well as NAFTA and TPP. In general, he's been more anti-cooperation than pro-. Though it's possible that's just because other people made those deals.

It’s noted that Trump’s threatening posture is the reason Kim is coming to the table now. But isn’t it as equally likely now because he knows Trump is at a nadir of public support, has many looming scandals, and he (Trump) is therefore in his weakest negotiating position?
-
As I note in the article, Kim's coming to these talks in a position of strength. But it appears they've been planning this for a while, which means Trump's latest scandals aren't a big factor. NK weapons development and SK electing a pro-negotiation president likely matter more.

This is another example of Putin's influence. Putin needs trump in office so he throws trump a bone to try to help his ratings.
