Beyond sacrificing US human rights objectives, it creates incentives for proliferation. And there’s no objective that cannot be achieved through multilateral or back channel talks. Unless the objective is POTUS’s personal objectives.

Has isolation been effective at discouraging proliferation or protecting human rights?

Really? Yes. Objectively. There are very few rogue states.

Like, what are countries that would be invented to behave worse because NK is incrementally less isolated? You still don’t want to be NK. Risk seems very small relative to, say, Trump’s validation of Duterte.

Why wouldn’t you want to secure your criminal regime and be a legit player on the world stage through a nuclear weapons program? Costs don’t outweigh the benefits.

Here’s what will happen: - huge photo op - propaganda bonanza for NK - post summit, NK renegs on everything, keeps nukes - NK blames US - wasted time buys progress to ICBMs - US looks like saps, allies facepalm - nuclear NK, Kim looks like a global badass, US looks like chumps

What does it mean to “buy time” here? How does NK have less time to work on ICBMs if there’s no summit? We have no practical military option here.

Every admin official has stated unequivocally that a military option is not ruled out. It’s a convention of the talker class that such a prospect won’t be appealed to. They ignore the policy makers at their own risk.

They say that to convince North Korea to make a deal. You're not really advocating preemptive strikes, are you?

Preemptive strike is all that remains outside of a war starting blockade. Trump has to go to the meeting because if he doesn't he'll be blamed for not doing everything possible to prevent a war. Trump just needs to go as soon as possible and get it over with.
