That's not impossible. I don't know, of course. But the simpler explanation is they didn't have good lines of communication set up yet, so they tried to set them up. And, being inexperienced amateurs, tried in an amateurish way.

As President every move Trump & family made would be scrutinized. That's why they needed a back channel. Private citizens don't have the same exposure with Secret Service et al constantly around.
