It is true, way too many people change their tune depending on who is in the WH. A lot of fiscal-flip-flopping going on.pic.twitter.com/qjyrK5yvEj

Have you ever heard of something called "the business cycle"? It means that different fiscal policies are appropriate at different times.

In the August 2016 article, Krugman is calling for Clinton to start deficit spending more in 2017 and beyond and not offset costs "now, or any time soon". Just 5 months later - before that spending would have even started - he went from "overwhelming case" to "deficits matter" ..

This is not an issue of business cycle, its referring to the EXACT SAME TIME. So either a) Krugman was VERY wrong in August (he said the case was "overwhelming") and didn't figure it out until January; or b) maybe partisanship has a bit to do with his opinions.

Maya neglected to provide a link to Krugman's original article so I will: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/08/opinion/time-to-borrow.html … He was referring specifically to investment in public infrastructure, which are very appropriately financed with borrowing b/c benefits will accrue for generations.

And in the 2018 article, he said borrowing for infrastructure would still be a good idea because interest rates remain low and infrastructure provides long-term investment. It's not his fault the headline writers go for sensationalism instead of the details of the argument.

Not a Krugman fan, but there is a large difference between using low interest rates to spend on infrastructure and passing regressive tax cuts that create large deficits when inflation is rising and unemployment is low.

Besides that, one could argue that the economic forecast from now is pretty different from six months ago.
