People who say the nation-state is fading away—because corporations, the internet, etc—are forgetting one essential thing: States control militaries. And there’s no sign that’s going anywhere.

I dunno. When a Syrian force is supplied German weapons components sold by a German defense contractor, it all gets blurry. Real fast.

That's affects some people, no question. But it's not shaping geopolitics like the US, Russian, or Chinese militaries, or even the Israelis or Iranians.

I did flub the wording. They went from German defense contractor to Iran to Syria. I'm not in full disagreement but... damn. That's a lot of weird behind the scenes stuff.
