Actually after the US invaded Iraq Isis (then called al Qaeda in Mesopotamia) was founded. Your example tends to undermine your case.

With Saddam in control of Iraq, AQI and ISIS wouldn't have happened. But Obama couldn't go back in time and reverse the invasion. His choice was to fully withdraw or keep some forces in the country. That's America's choice in Afghanistan moving forward: stay or leave.

1/2) I understand your point, but still think the whole experience shows costs of US intervention in other countries -- we make enemies -- also potentially more going on in Afghanistan. I don't support complete withdrawal from Afghanistan -- we agree on policy.

2/2) On the ISIS victories I would stress more the shift in policy from paying sons of Iraq to prosecuting their leaders (so I blame al-Maliki9. I'd at least hope that al-Abedi would have been able to prevent it without US military presence. But no way to know.

The world is just so not a black and white thing. I think it's a really interesting observation that Vietnam Nam didn't domino into complete South Asia communism. Insted, the region is now a good friend to US. Of course, Trump's policies are now eroding our influence there.
