Other than misconceptions about how immigration impacts job availability, wages, crime etc as well as entrenched antipathy toward Muslim immigrants? Obviously it's become a very strongly partisan issue, but I don't think the reasons are purely political except among legislators.

I don’t think it’s purely political either (that’s why I wrote it as a question). The factors you mentioned play a role as well. But if both parties attracted whites and non-whites at equal rates, the political discussion would be different.
