The worst of it is that they're all really smart people but they overestimate their understanding. They're all like, "We're really smart. We can figure this out." As if domain specific intelligence automatically generalized to any other domain.

The same time the internet was rising, and 24/hr news cycles were starting we had already not been teaching civics for a generation and critical thinking for more. People have no way of processing with the amount of information that exists outside of their emotions.

1 applies to many other social movements as well. The rise to prominence of POC and feminist voices in modern culture is certainly accelerated by social media. We just focus on the bigots because it's easier to notice trends reversing than accelerating.
