Martin Luther King is like a Founding Father -Venerated by nearly all Americans -Remembered selectively and often sanitized -Appropriated to make political points -Assumed to agree with whatever you currently think Besides Lincoln, do any other non-Founders have similar status?

Heh. But no. Remember the criticism she got for politicizing her Super Bowl performance?

If anyone else qualifies, that's probably the best pick. He's on Mount Rushmore, and given really positive treatment in pop culture. There's some opposition today to TR's role in conservation and anti-trust, but usually the criticism is against the concepts, rather than him.

TR's work on antitrust (which stopped woefully short of where it needed to go) is what I loved most about him and what #America desperately needs again. unfortunately, antitrust is not the sexiest issue to run on.pic.twitter.com/UV5uwkrphR

Agreed. There's no one else. Lincoln and MLK are sui generis. Washington, Jefferson don't rank with them. Maybe Franklin.

And Hamilton. Especially now that his rapping career has taken off. (Kidding, kidding. It's the Federalist Papers + shaping the US economic system)

Disagree on Kennedy. He’s popular with some, but there are others who don’t think highly of him. Not universally venerated like King.

Some love Reagan, but there are also people who speak negatively of him. Far more than King.
