European countries like the deal and believe Iran is honoring it, the US has no leverage, and European leaders have strong domestic political incentives to stand up to Trump's bullying. Well said. A hallmark of Trump's negotiating style is a failure to correctly the cards in his own hand. He bluffs ferociously but can't actually win.

What makes it worse is he does sort of win. Not on behalf of the United States. He's hurting US interests. But on behalf of a slice of his domestic audience with a very shallow understanding of international relations, who like the bluster and don't care about the follow through.

Call that "winning by losing." Yes, making a balls up of NATO or TPP or NAFTA or steel imports or any of the other dozens of issues may not matter to the base, and they may even love the defiant act that goes with it, but it's still "losing" in terms of national interest.
