A “merit-based” immigration system prioritizes individuals with high-level skills, such as engineers. Trump wants to prioritize people from predominantly white countries. If the difference between these isn’t immediately obvious to you, it’s time for some self-reflection.

Most Dreamers speak very good English. Many have very good educations. Many others have served in the military with more than a few making the ultimate sacrifice for the US. How are we supposed to do better than that? You should engage in some self-reflection.

My comment has nothing to do with Dreamers. It’s directed at the unfortunately high number of people trying to defend Trump’s “shithole” comment on the grounds that it was actually advocacy of a merit-based immigration system. It wasn’t.

My bad, Nicholas. I should have read your tweet more closely. I agree wholeheartedly.

What makes me think Trump wants to prioritize people from predominantly white countries is he singled out Norway as desirable, and predominantly black countries as undesirable, rather than make an argument about individuals’ skills.

"merit" based, is also meaningless for things like DACA. kids don't have merit yet, other than drive. People from around the world have desire and drive, and just because they are poor, or from a poor country does not mean they are lazy, bad, drug dealers and etc.

DACA is a different issue. It deals with people who are already in the US, and have been for some time. Merit-based immigration is part of the debate as to which people applying to enter the US should be allowed in. Unless you say "everyone," the no's and yes's need some basis.

Thanks. and of course the no/yes need some basis, but the merit system I've seen proposed (phd or master's required) etc., would have excluded my hubby, as an example, who came on the lottery and has contributed every since. (of course, even on lottery you have to meet criteria)

I believe the context was TPS versus merit-based.
