The security upside is significant while many hypothetical risks haven't become actual (as far as I know without access to classified info). I'd prefer oversight and robust methods of dealing with false-positives over shutting it down, but the risks should be taken seriously.

It's tough to speculate what sort of actual, publicly-known abuse would lead the public to demand change. "They know stuff about you" isn't close to enough in the social media age. Something like serious punishment based on privately held political beliefs?
