If there is a skunk in my garage, the whole damn family will be in favor of getting it out. The skunk would probably quote your last statement.

If your family elected the skunk, that would be a weird choice.
-
That would be a weird response to a family that doesn't vote for skunks. At any rate, have a very merry skunkless Christmas season. (Sincerely)

You too.

Agreed, but the process by which the bill was created was very opaque and not in accordance with normal order. I think that’s what has many people so upset.

Technically, you are correct. It's probably better to call it secretive, unethical, self-serving, and a travesty of what it means to be a representative of your state or district. I see how much my kids are struggling and this won't help them any.
-
Sure, that works.

Those are reasons to dislike it.

Not following the rules of order seems undemocratic to me. Failing to listen to their constituents also isn’t democratic. They were elected to represent us, not to enrich themselves at our expense.

Yeah, but they did barely any public hearings on it and I don’t think the President did even one town hall on it. Let’s call it democratic-light. Def made with rice.
-
This is my favorite response.

The house does not represent the majority of Americans. Most Americans identify as Democrats, but have been gerrymandered out of representation.
-
I agree that gerrymandering is problematic. But far fewer than half of all Americans identify as Democrats. (Latest numbers: 30%)http://news.gallup.com/poll/15370/party-affiliation.aspx …
-
Sorry. I should have said more Americans identify as Democrats vs. GOP and that more Americans vote for Democrats than for Republicans.

When representatives stop representing the median voter in their district, you don't have democracy either
-
Are we sure they’re not? Accounting for voters’ issue rankings, reps can represent the median voter in general without representing the median voter on a given issue Also, it has to be median on Election Day, not any given day (Gerrymandering’s problematic, but you said district)

It reflects fact that GOP Congress is answerable to very small group of donors, and not to voters. In that respect, it is profoundly undemocratic.
-
The influence of donors wasn't a secret, and came up repeatedly in 2016. Voters picked them anyway. If voters don't like it, hopefully they'll vote for different candidates next time.
-
The tax bill in fact is a text book example of anti-democracy. It was drafted in secret and passed before it could be scrutinized even by those legislators who voted for it. Corker's defense to claims that he benefitted from the pass through provision was that he did not read it

As this article explains, open and notorious corruption of democracy is corruption nonetheless.https://www.brennancenter.org/blog/how-citizens-united-changed-politics-and-shaped-tax-bill#.Wjwn6vDQoHY.twitter …
