Making Rey's worth not dependant on blood was the most unambiguously good choice made in TLJ. I am shocked this is controversial.

People forgot that “I am your father” was awesome because it was so unexpected. With fans obsessing over which well-known characters were Rey’s parents, giving them an unexpected answer ended up being more like Empire than what they thought they wanted.

One of the major themes of the whole Star Wars series is the impossibility of living up to the pressures that authority figures place on people. This movie was about the realization that having no guidance is even scarier.
