Trump and Haley’s (mostly, maybe entirely) empty threat to cut off foreign aid in response to UNGA vote is foreign policy driven by reality show posturing rather than smart strategy to advance American interests.

And what is he picking this fight over? A vote in the UN General Assembly. They’re non-binding. Have no effect besides expressing an opinion. Who cares? Just ignore it.

Foreign aid gets US military, intelligence, and economic partnerships. Not irrelevant UNGA votes. To the extent he’s bluffing, US looks bad. And if US cuts aid, it hurts US interests. It’s for a domestic audience that cares more about posturing than national interest. Pathetic.

UNGA vote is in: 128 for 9 against 35 abstain Besides US and Israel, here’s the no votes: Guatemala, Honduras, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Togo. That’s it. Nice threat, Trump (and Haley). Very productive. https://twitter.com/orenkessler/status/943894666646360064 …

a faliure does not equal irrelevance....
