Biggest recipients of US foreign aid: Afghanistan Israel Iraq Egypt Jordan It’s not charity. It’s building the capacity of partners against terrorism and other threats.

Further down the list is econ help to African countries Much of that comes back as contracts for US companies It also gets access, influence, and develops markets for US products. China’s doing that also. Trump already helped China gain against US in Asia-Pacific. Now Africa too?

Trump says it’ll save money. Set aside that foreign aid is a cheap way to advance US interests and just consider the savings. Total around 1% of US budget. Without big military partners, it’s a fraction of that. Not even 5% of the tax bill’s $150B annual deficit increase.

And what is he picking this fight over? A vote in the UN General Assembly. They’re non-binding. Have no effect besides expressing an opinion. Who cares? Just ignore it.

Foreign aid gets US military, intelligence, and economic partnerships. Not irrelevant UNGA votes. To the extent he’s bluffing, US looks bad. And if US cuts aid, it hurts US interests. It’s for a domestic audience that cares more about posturing than national interest. Pathetic.

UNGA vote is in: 128 for 9 against 35 abstain Besides US and Israel, here’s the no votes: Guatemala, Honduras, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Togo. That’s it. Nice threat, Trump (and Haley). Very productive. https://twitter.com/orenkessler/status/943894666646360064 …

If the people who still support Trump realize that it could not be America alone they would change their mind. No country can ride alone!
-
One of the reasons we are safe from harm is because of our Allies who stand with us. Why threaten your friends? Burning bridges is not good!
-
It’s frustrating, because the US gained so much power by building alliance networks with itself at the center, and now fewer want to work with America. See, for example, Trump’s inability to secure any bilateral trade deals in Asia.
-
Mr. Grossman you are absolutely, 100% right. When you understand how it all works foreign & domestic policy always work hand in hand.

Actually,
#NikkiHaley does not have our backing or our backs. We don’t want her nipping at the heels of every nation in the world like a deranged Chihuahua. Russia may want her to act the fool but USA citizens don’t approve.@UN@NATO@CIA@FBIpic.twitter.com/rJApk0Ggj3

Entirely agree. See my post of yesterday, below. Not only is it empty 'posturing,' it's having a predictably negative effect (see, e.g., Canada's intention now to vote Yes on the UNGA resolution against the US).pic.twitter.com/Ep1zX9jSle

Extortion isn't an acceptable tool in diplomacy and the U.S. shouldn't be applauding dictatorships for their loyalty!
