Today: 1) NeverTrump conservatives argued over @JRubinBlogger and whether she's being too NeverTrump. 2) Progressives argued over Ta-Nehisi Coates and whether he's not being progressive enough. 3) Trump supporters cheered for whatever Donald Trump did. @davidfrum @charlescwcooke

Not about whether @JRubinBlogger is too anti-Trump. But whether she’s lost her intellectual integrity over her own previously stated beliefs. She no longer bases her beliefs on a conservative perspective but on them being the opposite of any position Trump makes.

How's that different from being too anti-Trump?

But it’s not about Trump, per se. It’s not whether Trump is merely bad or pure evil. It’s about how her opinions on issues have been completely warped by her antagonism towards Trump.

"her opinions on issues have been completely warped by her antagonism towards Trump." That sure sounds like calling her too anti-Trump.

Perhaps it’s a fine line. But the heart of the article isn’t about her views on Trump. It’s about the changes in her opinions on issues (ie. Iran & Jerusalem). Trump may be the reason, but it’s not the basis of the criticism.

The reason I’m even making the point is that I was a long time reader of hers. Agreed with her all along the primaries and even into the election. But then her opinions on issues changed and her voice became so vitriolic that it has become hard to even read her anymore.

To elaborate just a little further (sorry!), even if I agree with something Trump is doing, usually I disagree with how or why he is doing it. And I’d completely understand if that was basis of her objections. Instead, she objects to the position itself. Again, fine line!

I see your point (though I stand by calling that accusation "too anti-Trump," as in her opposition to Trump has altered her positions, rather than disagreeing with Trump when he holds a different position, or when he's pursuing a good goal with bad means).

I thought Cooke's critique was harsh, but well defended, and that Frum's argument was right as well. The main thing underlying my original tweet was disagreement with people insisting Cooke and Frum's points are mutually exclusive.

However, Rothman's focus--like most of the conservative end-of-year assessments--is domestic policy. On foreign policy, he's been a net negative. Abandoning the TPP (and dragging the ostensibly conservative party to an anti-free trade position) is one of many unforced errors.

My chief concern with Trump was on FP and, from a conservative interventionist perspective, I couldn't disagree more. He's exceeded my expectations. Though I miss TPP, it was dead long before inauguration day.

I think Hillary would've lawyered her way into supporting TPP again, but who knows. Either way, quitting ceded Asia-Pacific to China. The problem with assessing Trump's FP now is no crisis has hit yet. He hasn't had to rally a coalition of the willing. NATO hasn't been tested...

North Korea's on the same risk-but-not-an-immediate-crisis track. The ISIS campaign ended well, but post-conflict's fraught with risks. But he couldn't get bilateral trade deals in Asia--others don't trust him. When a real crisis hits, I'm skeptical he can rally others to meet it
