Not hard to predict, but politicians and pundits are overdetermining the Alabama results. Democrats should enjoy the victory. Black voters deserve credit. But does anyone doubt Republicans would've won if they nominated even a slightly decent human being? Little predictive value.https://twitter.com/NGrossman81/status/940602037691133952 …

If Moore wins: Trump's invulnerable, Dems will never win (because identity politics), Bannon's a genius. If Jones wins: Trump's toxic! Run away! Save yourselves! In reality, if Jones wins, it's because Moore's uniquely terrible, and if Moore wins, it's because Alabama is Alabama.

Yes & no. Almost any other Republican wd have won for sure, but this does have implications for D’s ability to build in red states; to recruit & raise money; for Bannon vs. establishment; for alleged omnipotence of hallowed “Trump base”.....

I think you're right. But a lot of that comes from previously overdetermining 2016--Bannon, Trump base, etc.--as if it was a clear national mandate and not really close.

The interesting thing though, is that Trump's unique brand of terrible has emboldened the also-terrible to come out of the woodwork to take office. The problem for THEM is that they don't understand just quite how much of an anomaly Trump really is.

Adding to that, how much of an anomaly 2016 really was. Divided, disorganized Republican primary field. Coming off 8 years of Obama. Divided Democratic party. The first real social media election. Hillary. Russia. etc., etc.

Yes, it was kind of a "perfect storm" in that way.

I think you are right up to a point. Trump was a non-factor. The real lesson from the election is that the GOP can't just nominate anybody in a red state & expect automatic victory. Dems need to understand this too. We need more Doug Joneses as candidates across the board.

On the contrary, GOP preference for backing monsters has a great deal of predictive value
