With TPP, US was at the center of a 13-country pact excluding China. Now, 11 of them made a pact excluding US, and many are getting closer to China. Trump abandoned a great geopolitical move containing China's rise, and united other countries in an anti-US containment strategy.https://twitter.com/AP/status/929142126759350272 …

POTUS' Asia trip hasn't been nearly as gaffe-prone as his swing through Europe. But it's been more embarrassing. Trying, and failing, to get bilateral trade deals to replace the multilateral deal he walked away from. And a spectacle of ass kissing in China. 4/x

Diplomacy is not purely transactional. It's about building relationships--cultivating long-term partners, not "winning" short-term deals. To address the incredibly difficult problem of North Korea, Trump needs to unite many countries behind him. But who wants to follow? 5/x

To stand up to Chinese expansionism in the South China Sea, the US needs to work with Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei. Those countries all have maritime claims that overlap China's, and they're also three of the countries Trump abandoned by quitting the TPP. 6/x

Thanks to Trump, it's abundantly clear to everyone in the region that the future belongs to China. It was inevitable that American hegemony would decline. But I never thought the US would just give it away. (END)

Don’t think he’s screwing them over, just keeping “America First”. I’d bet TPP was bad for US Manufacturers, ppl Trump wants to help. Also, weren’t governments/countries liable to be sued by businesses via TPP?
-
I don't think he screwed them over for the purpose of screwing them over. But he still screwed them over. On balance, TPP was good for US manufacturers. There were, however, legitimate criticisms. But its geopolitical affects were much more significant than its economic effects.

DT has a long history of negotiating as if he has leverage when has none, dating back to his multiple business failings. Of course, that's not as dangerous as his failures in negotiating with sovereign nations.
-
But you see, he thought he could *negotiate* the same way he did in biz, being notorious for
#bullying tactics that he could get away with in his biz. He's still getting away with things, bc he's still president...but his tactics are not sustainable for the long term.
