In January, I wrote that quitting the TPP ceded Asia-Pacific to China. And I'm not at all happy to see more evidence of that coming true. 2/xhttps://arcdigital.media/by-quitting-the-trans-pacific-partnership-trump-cedes-asia-pacific-to-china-f63514a783ac …

Did Trump really think he could screw over a bunch of countries, tossing aside 7 years of painstaking negotiations, and they'd come crawling back? They're countries, not contractors or business partners. You can't scare them with lawsuits, or trick them with bankruptcies. 3/x

POTUS' Asia trip hasn't been nearly as gaffe-prone as his swing through Europe. But it's been more embarrassing. Trying, and failing, to get bilateral trade deals to replace the multilateral deal he walked away from. And a spectacle of ass kissing in China. 4/x

Diplomacy is not purely transactional. It's about building relationships--cultivating long-term partners, not "winning" short-term deals. To address the incredibly difficult problem of North Korea, Trump needs to unite many countries behind him. But who wants to follow? 5/x

To stand up to Chinese expansionism in the South China Sea, the US needs to work with Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei. Those countries all have maritime claims that overlap China's, and they're also three of the countries Trump abandoned by quitting the TPP. 6/x

Thanks to Trump, it's abundantly clear to everyone in the region that the future belongs to China. It was inevitable that American hegemony would decline. But I never thought the US would just give it away. (END)

President Obama & Hillary knew this, but NO all those people who were against another trade agreement were against. It was not just for trade it was for Security purposes also. China has been building up their military & even has this huge military Island. tRump & those against
-
are all friggen idiots. Just like the Paris Climate accord. We need to get him & his cronies out of office before they have completely destroyed our country.
-
One more thing I forgot to mention, Bernie Sanders also was against TPP because he did not understand the magnitude of what it was about, he too only thought it was about trade. So he and others that were against are to also blame.
-
Bernie was totally wrong about this too. The geopolitical effects of TPP were much, much greater than the economic effects. A few Americans might have been hurt by the TPP. But the smart thing to do was help those individuals, not screw over Asian, South & North American partners
-
Exactly, but the TPP also was good for the agricultural sector. But it really was about our standing & security & to reign in China. Obama Knew exactly how it would help.
-
Republican foreign policy strategists knew it too. As a geopolitical move, it was bipartisan (because it was clearly in America's interests).
-
Yes they did, wonder if pressure could be put on them to help & try to mend? How much more stupid can tRump get? But then again he did this for Putin. President Obama Like Mueller is 4 steps ahead with strategy as in a good chess player, DT can't even play Tiddlywinks.

I'd say ceded rather than outsourced. Outsourced implies we're still in charge, just not doing the work. Otherwise, yeah.

I feel like it's 410 AD.

Except America's not facing an advancing military threat. We're just giving it away.

This was an obvious consequence of Trump’s actions and now the Trumpistas will see their jobs going, job losses across the board and the Stock Market heading down. Will they realise or believe it tho? I doubt it - it will be Roosevelt’s fault!
-
Whatabout Roosevelt, huh? How come the media's not talking about that?

Elections have consequences...

Big ones

We'll be lucky if we can undo all the damage in 2 terms post-Trump. And still requires some minor amount of bipartisanship from
@GOP. Long, tough road ahead.
