There's the fact that cheaper energy is good for every other sector of the economy.
-
-
-
And in the 1990s, that would have been a reasonable argument. But prices have changed a lot, especially natural gas and solar.
-
Solar can't replace it yet. Natural gas has its own environmental problems - but if it's cheaper, why not just wait for the market to work?
-
Market's already working. That's why pulling out is so dumb. It forfeits global leadership in exchange for no long term economic gain.
-
Not if other countries also pull out! But in any event, global leadership and $2 gets you a nice cup of coffee.
-
Pulling out should be good for jobs, which hopefully won't make liberals unhappy.
-
If it were good for jobs it would be worth considering. But it won't be.

Do you think Paris would have made India and China change course in substantial ways?
-
Hard to draw direct cause-and-effect, and depends on what you mean by "substantial," but yes. Both ahead of schedule https://insideclimatenews.org/news/15052017/china-india-paris-climate-goals-emissions-coal-renewable-energy …
-
My hunch is renewables become so affordable in next two decades that everyone outpaces green estimates; see Gore's semi-recent TED talk
-
That looks likely. It's another reason why pulling out is so dumb. Why forfeit global leadership if we're going to meet requirements anyway?
