c) The Saudis knew the response from the White House would be tepid, if existent.
-
-
-
That would be consistent with both options. a) Risk is lower than usual, because if it goes bad, the White House won't do anything. b) Time to assert ourselves forcefully. The White House is, tacitly or explicitly, giving us the green light.
-
I thought at first it was a) but am getting a sick feeling it might have been b), Worse yet, if that did prove to be true, the most we'd get from Congress is more furrowed brows and "concern."
-
From the Trump administration yes. But Congress seems to care. Many from both parties started the US down the path towards sanctions. We'll see.
-
It's all talk right now. I don't have faith they'll do anything to actually check this POTUS. Certainly not now, less than 4 weeks from an election. Yes, once upon a time they passed Russia sanctions, but that was a different time.
-
Cynical, but you may be right. We'll see.

Turkey announced to the world they had audio/video proof AND they didn't want to compromise methods. Those two statements directly at odds. They could've shared with allied IC confidentially, but chose not too.
-
And, release of pastor convenient timing. And, SA offered Turkey a joint investigation, which they accepted....that last is kinda weird.
-
I don't think that's weird. Better to be involved than on the outside. Show concern. Take it seriously. Then declare the investigation cleared you (whether it did or not), and say any reports to the contrary are biased fake news.
-
It makes sense if you are SA, sure. I meant it makes no sense for Turkey. Did Scotland Yard join a Russian sponsored 'joint investigation' re: the poisonings? I'll have to look, but I don't think so.

It could be c, which might depend on whether Turkey considers SA a regional rival, or if a US/SA rift is in their perceived best interest.

They wanted to take him out quietly, with a 15-man goon squad? M-Kay.
-
This guy pat of the hit squad: "One of the Saudi men was identified by Turkey's official Anadolu Agency and Sabah as Salah Muhammed al-Tubaiqi. He is listed on an official Saudi health website as the head of the forensic medicine department at the interior ministry." C'mon!
