Politicians and media's bad faith interpretation of political rhetoric as calls for violence--"targeting" opponents, "kick them," etc.--desensitize people to actual calls for violence. Calls for violence are calls for violence. Metaphors are metaphors. Stop being so disingenuous.

well, sometimes metaphors are not metaphors, like when you use gun sight crosshairs on a map to target your opponents... and then surprisingly one gets shot.pic.twitter.com/8Fy15k3yzF

This is one of the cases I had in mind. Clearly a metaphor, and unrelated to any actual violence. Jared Loughner is schizophrenic, and became convinced Giffords personally snubbed him two years before he shot her. It had nothing to do with any campaign rhetoric or images.

yes, I know his history, but I'm not so convinced that the rhetoric didn't influence him. In fact, I'd be willing to bet, since he was obsessed with Giffords, that he saw this interview. If so, is it Giffords' fault for highlighting it?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDJGb__n0pc …
