Populist leaders deploying conspiracy theories to paint popular opposition as illegitimate often precedes violent crackdowns and authoritarian power grabs. Doesn’t mean that’ll happen here. The only thing I see standing in his way is that he doesn't have proximate authority over local law enforcement, and I don't see the leadership of the armed forces allowing themselves to be used this way.

The local police leaders who cheer when the president denounces the media and when he tells them to rough up suspects do not inspire confidence. To be clear, I think this scenario is unlikely. But the chances are less close to zero than they were, and that's unsettling.

I agree it's unlikely. But I expected small-R resistance to him would increase over time among folks in govt. It's hardened. Dunno about military, really.
