People keep expecting America to make a big deal out of Saudi Arabia murdering a journalist as if the US government isn't run by people who denounce the free press, shower praise on authoritarians, and gush during their visit to Saudi Arabia that they didn't see any protesters.https://twitter.com/McFaul/status/1049037759426441216 …

I hate how we give them a pass because they have oil. Disgusts me.

The implication of OP seems to be that prior to this administration, we would have been tough with the Saudis. But that is manifestly false.

I don't think that. We've been giving them a pass since FDR.

I don't think that either. It's relative, not absolute. The US has never been especially tough with the Saudis--and there are some interesting arguments for why that's the right choice--but this admin is encouraging Saudis' worst impulses in a way previous admins didn't.

A complicating factor here is that they can always go to unscrupulous China if they get too annoyed with all this human rights talk and pressures to curb their theocratic awfulness. So maybe we are in a bind.

We are living in the misinformation age & America has become exactly what it has professed to despise. I'm not saying it happen since Trump, but it certainly escalated with Trump. Just as well. US exceptionalism was always a big fat lie.
