There are two Kavanaugh nominations. Within America’s two big information universes, two unshakable narratives have taken hold. No matter how it turns out, these contradictory narratives will persist, doing lasting damage to the country. (THREAD)

In a little while, Kavanaugh will withdraw, get confirmed, or voted down. But the competing red and blue narratives about him will persist. The wounds will fester, no matter how it turns out. And the judicial wars will continue to escalate. The system cannot hold forever. (END)

PS1: Erick Erickson shared the 7th tweet of my thread (to disagree with it). His position, along with the replies to his tweet and mine, provide a good example of red bubble rejecting my argument (as I explained in tweet 8 above). https://twitter.com/EWErickson/status/1044267025944793089 …

PS2: You'll notice a steadfast conviction that: 1) All accusations against Kavanaugh are false and invented by Dems 2) The same will happen with every future GOP nominee 3) Pointing out that no one accused Gorsuch, Alito, Roberts of sexual assault does not shake convictions 1 & 2

PS3: In the variations of "believe women" and "I believe Dr. Blasey Ford," blue bubble steadfastly believes Kavanaugh is guilty of sexual assault. These two competing narratives dominate their respective information bubbles. They cannot be reconciled and will linger for years.

This is incorrect. His position of abortion now is not evidence of anything. I don't know anyone making that argument. I see liberals painstakingly reasoning through why women would come forward if it wasn't true.
-
I'm not saying everyone's making that argument. But Kavanaugh's alleged personal behavior towards women and his judicial positions on issues that affect women are intertwined for many Dems. For example, Sen. Hirono argued that his judicial positions make his denials less credible
-
No. She said *his lies* about his judicial positions make his denials less credible. I agree with that.
-
I understood her statements as linking the two more closely. But surely you've seen people who oppose Kavanaugh's nomination directly link his alleged personal behavior towards women and his judicial stance on issues that affect women. An example in here:http://www.latimes.com/la-ol-opinion-newsletter-kavanaugh-women-20180922-htmlstory.html …
-
I read this as: his past sexual assault of women tells you something about his attitude towards women, which carries into his jurisprudence in areas that concern women. This is eminently sensible. 1/2
-
I *don't* read this as: using his opinion on Roe v. Wade to tell you if he committed assault or not. That is a fact-finding task and should be carried out by non-partisan investigators. 2/2

Which outlet tied his views on abortion to evidence he sexually assaulted someone? Don't recall any media outlet doing that for For Gorsuch, who has the same views. Feels like you're trying hard for both sidesism when its not as applicable as it is other times
-
Sen. Mazie Hirono has linked his positions and his personal behavior, as have others. You're right, no one did that for Gorsuch (or Alito or Roberts). That's why I've been arguing that the main variable is Kavanaugh, not the party who nominated him. Red bubble rejects my argument
-
Fair. I'm unfamiliar with that Senators statements...I mostly only watch NPR & BBC so miss some things

Wait, what? I haven’t heard that his position on abortion is tied to this allegation. They’re two separate things. Are you sure you’ve got something to back this up?
-
Sen. Mazie Hirono argued that Kavanaugh's denials are less credible because of his positions on women's rights issues, including reproductive choice.
-
Thanks. I’ll check that out. That’s a muddy argument and not one I’d make. I think Kavanaugh’s an awful choice and I think the claims are credible, but I don’t draw a line between the reproductive decisions and the alleged attempted rape.
