In the blue bubble, Brett Kavanaugh is a sexual predator—An attempted rapist (or worse) with deep, unredeemable character flaws. Blasey Ford’s accusation is established fact, and if Ramirez’ accusation isn’t yet, it will be soon. Even worse, Kavanaugh is unrepentant and lying 2/x

In the blue bubble, Republicans know Kavanaugh is a sexual predator, and they’re trying to push him through anyway. He’s the personification of rich white male privilege—they want him to get away with it. After Garland fiasco, confirming Kavanaugh renders SCOTUS illegitimate. 3/x

In the red bubble, Kavanaugh is an innocent man—an exemplary man—dragged through the mud by political opportunists. His accusers are lying, or at least mistaken. They’ve been put up to it, or at least manipulated, by Democrats, who will do anything to tar or delay the process 4/x

In the red bubble, Democrats oppose Kavanaugh because he follows the Constitution and they want a Supreme Court that legislates progressive causes. If they get away with this manufactured smear campaign, they’ll learn it works, and do it against every future GOP nominee. 5/x

The red and blue narratives are locked in. They can't both be true, and yet they both exist, side by side. Millions believe Kavanaugh is a sexual predator. Millions believe he's being framed. And no evidence, no testimony can convince them otherwise. 6/x

I think accusations against Kavanaugh are serious, and probably impossible to prove or disprove. SCOTUS legitimacy matters, and it'd be better for the country and conservative causes to replace him with someone unclouded by personal integrity questions 7/xhttps://arcdigital.media/everyones-applying-the-wrong-standard-to-kavanaugh-s-nomination-9b5859209039?source=friends_link&sk=4973bf2f07aec042d2ede336c92a5dca …

Red bubble has rejected my argument. I point out that SCOTUS confirmations aren't criminal trials, so beyond a reasonable doubt isn't the appropriate standard. Roberts, Alito, and Gorsuch all cleared the high bar, and another conservative could too. Red bubble disagrees. 8/x

The partisan fight is all-consuming. Because red bubble’s unshakable premise is Dems are unjustly smearing Kavanaugh, giving in elevates mob justice, incentivizing future made up accusations. And Dems might win the Senate, blocking any conservative. It’s Kavanaugh or bust. 9/x

Blue bubble's caught up in the partisan fight too. Kavanaugh's position on abortion today is evidence he committed attempted rape in high school. Other white, prep school, ivy league men have committed sexual assault, which makes him more suspect. He's more symbol than man. 10/x

In a little while, Kavanaugh will withdraw, get confirmed, or voted down. But the competing red and blue narratives about him will persist. The wounds will fester, no matter how it turns out. And the judicial wars will continue to escalate. The system cannot hold forever. (END)

PS1: Erick Erickson shared the 7th tweet of my thread (to disagree with it). His position, along with the replies to his tweet and mine, provide a good example of red bubble rejecting my argument (as I explained in tweet 8 above). https://twitter.com/EWErickson/status/1044267025944793089 …

PS2: You'll notice a steadfast conviction that: 1) All accusations against Kavanaugh are false and invented by Dems 2) The same will happen with every future GOP nominee 3) Pointing out that no one accused Gorsuch, Alito, Roberts of sexual assault does not shake convictions 1 & 2

PS3: In the variations of "believe women" and "I believe Dr. Blasey Ford," blue bubble steadfastly believes Kavanaugh is guilty of sexual assault. These two competing narratives dominate their respective information bubbles. They cannot be reconciled and will linger for years.

and this just ignores all the debt he racked up, that suddenly disappeared.

I mentioned that in the article (see tweet 7).

No problem. That's why I directed you to it.

I'll bet you don't get "my bad" all that often !!

Nope. Not on this website anyway.

I will give my take, which has some additional nuances. The charges are serious and need an independent investigation. They involve crimes against women and male impunity. And the old boys' club isn't limited to the GOP. This issue is separate from the political ones. 1/x
-
Each side has added their politics to the issue. GOP sees Kavanaugh as both consolidation of their power & appeasing Trump because of Kavanaugh's views of presidential immunity. Dems' platform includes pro-choice so naturally they will oppose Kavanaugh & jump on accusations. 2/x
-
My reason for opposing Kavanaugh is mainly due to his views on presidential immunity from prosecution & gun control. His vote could lead to overturning of convictions & gun laws. Add to that GOP's voter suppression & gerrymandering, possibly leading to a one-party state. 3/x
-
In effect, Kavanaugh appointment could lead to GOP controlling all three branches of federal government, reducing or eliminating protections for citizens & further concentrating wealth in the hands of a few. I see this event as the defining moment for our republic. END
-
That's separate from questions of personal integrity. Disliking a nominee based on political positions makes sense. One could agree with Kavanaugh's positions and prefer an alternative nominee who agrees with those positions, but is unclouded by the personal integrity questions.
-
On that we concur. Even aside from the attempted rape allegations, Kavanaugh comes with a lot of personal baggage.
