Why not replace Kavanaugh? I keep returning to this. It'd be better for the country and grant greater legitimacy to conservative rulings. The answer I'm left with: Fighting Democrats is all-consuming. They must suffer--even if it hurts the country and risks long-term policy goals

Generally true but, in this case, I think they’re fighting for a particular purpose: BK’s views on Presidential immunity make him indispensable.

And the fact the new nominee wouldn't be confirmed until after midterms...

Roberts was confirmed in less time. Pick someone with impeccable credentials and a squeaky-clean personal record like him, and it's easily doable. Even if not, Rs are favorite to hold Senate. And there's the lame duck. I find the Kavanaugh-or-bust argument unpersuasive.

You're right that there could be time but also losing Senate in midterms would of course complicate things, you must realize that, right? I think for rank & file it's about seeing this maneuver as a dirty delay tactic & they don't want Rs to bow to it.

"I think for rank & file it's about seeing this maneuver as a dirty delay tactic & they don't want Rs to bow to it." As I said, fighting Democrats is all-consuming. Alternative option is to rise above it, prioritize the country, still get a conservative. But no. Short-term fight.

Yes, but they feel they've been rising above it for many years & it gets them nowhere. It's part of why Trump got elected, in their minds they're tired of always taking the high road with no return on it. Personally think it's short sighted & they did have returns...

I understand they feel that way. I'm arguing that they're wrong.

Wrong that they haven't been rising above it (maybe until Obama anyway)? But don't you think you have a partisan view just like everyone else? I feel at least they didn't employ as much vitriol as D's for a period while constantly being called names, etc. for any opposing pov

On the judicial confirmation wars, I think it's the clearest case of both sides are to blame in US politics. If it looks like it's entirely one sides' fault, roll the clock back a little.

Yeah, I could maybe get behind this. But then again look at the vote margins on last few D noms & how easily/widely they were confirmed compared to R noms. Do you think that's solely due to quality of noms? I don't think Sotomayor was a particularly good one.

Definitely. The Garland no REALLY changed things. And sure the Dems are obstructing, but Trump has no one to blame but himself. McC even tried to warn him off BK. BUT the Prez immunity issue pushed him to BK...
