1) They're afraid they can't get a new candidate through in time for November. 2) They're afraid withdrawing will lead to even more depressed turnout. 3) Many are afraid of setting a precedent of "guilty until proven innocent" based on the media rather than a hearing.https://twitter.com/NGrossman81/status/1043135053159649280 …

People like Hirono are not helping, but I agree. There's still a list. Pick a name out of a hat if you have to.

Not so much "attack more easily" but stand a chance of defeating. More than a few partisan Democrats view preventing an originalist/conservative from taking Kennedy's seat as almost existential and worth corrupting the process to stop.
-
They failed with Gorsuch, I fail to see them succeeding with Gorsuch 2.0.
-
Gorsuch was replacing Scalia, balance was unchanged. They view this seat as much more important and worth going down in flames to prevent an originalist from taking it.
-
Again, let them. Gorsuch was popular and seen as a good egg. That's what matters for him and the court.

I don't think they will prefer Kavanaugh, but they will keep trying to push off the vote until after the midterms on the chance they can take the Senate. That is (obviously) why the Ford letter was leaked when it was.
