Generally true but, in this case, I think they’re fighting for a particular purpose: BK’s views on Presidential immunity make him indispensable.

And the fact the new nominee wouldn't be confirmed until after midterms...
-
Roberts was confirmed in less time. Pick someone with impeccable credentials and a squeaky-clean personal record like him, and it's easily doable. Even if not, Rs are favorite to hold Senate. And there's the lame duck. I find the Kavanaugh-or-bust argument unpersuasive.
-
You're right that there could be time but also losing Senate in midterms would of course complicate things, you must realize that, right? I think for rank & file it's about seeing this maneuver as a dirty delay tactic & they don't want Rs to bow to it.
-
"I think for rank & file it's about seeing this maneuver as a dirty delay tactic & they don't want Rs to bow to it." As I said, fighting Democrats is all-consuming. Alternative option is to rise above it, prioritize the country, still get a conservative. But no. Short-term fight.
-
Yes, but they feel they've been rising above it for many years & it gets them nowhere. It's part of why Trump got elected, in their minds they're tired of always taking the high road with no return on it. Personally think it's short sighted & they did have returns...
-
I understand they feel that way. I'm arguing that they're wrong.
-
Wrong that they haven't been rising above it (maybe until Obama anyway)? But don't you think you have a partisan view just like everyone else? I feel at least they didn't employ as much vitriol as D's for a period while constantly being called names, etc. for any opposing pov

I suspect it is more in the category of BK agreeing to protect trump from Mueller. Other conservatives may not do this and he needs the protection.
-
I buy that as possibly part of Trump's calculus. But I don't think it's an active consideration for most rank-and-file Republicans that are insisting it must be Kavanaugh, rather than another conservative who isn't clouded by questions of personal integrity.
-
Resolving the riddle of assessing people’s motives is identifying where the two goals (protection for Trump vs. consolidation of GOP power) intersect. Conservatives as a whole may still have an ideology but the GOP leadership doesn’t seem to have one anymore.

I thought Barret would get the nod... but now we have this circus.

A Poli Sci professor once told us that it’s dangerous to see your enemy as vermin to be exterminated

Quite dangerous, yes. I don't think the country's gone quite that far, but we're definitely closer than we were.

Because we are at the point it will require a lame duck confirmation and even Mitch knows that is a bad idea.. He will do it, but he doesn't want to.
-
Roberts was confirmed in less time. Pick someone like him (eminently qualified, squeaky clean) and they can do it before November. And Republicans are favorites to hold on to the Senate.
-
No way they can do it before midterms after this mess. This is also Trump nominating. Even if the Senate keeps the majority, a lame duck confirmation will blow up.

There’s also some fear of losing a senate majority at the midterms. Likely no one else could be pushed through in time for a vote ahead of November, correct?
-
Roberts was confirmed in less time. Pick someone highly qualified and squeaky-clean like him and it's definitely doable. Plus Republicans are favorites to hold Senate. And if they lose, there's still lame duck.
