Then they could not confirm this person before the Midterm elections.

At this point, probably not. Though that’s a big indictment of the original decision to nominate him. He obviously had more baggage than others on the short-list, even without adding in the sexual assault accusation.

No one is safe from demonic Democrats in their efforts to derail this president. If we drop Kavanaugh, the next nominee will face the same false accusations. Guaranteed. This man has been confirmed to a number of seats in public office...this is bullsh*t
-
Two democrat lawmakers sitting on this until the eleventh hour tells it all. Shamelessly wielding this woman's accusation as a political hatchet for their own ends.

Don’t forget that Leader McConnell advised against this nomination. He knew there would be difficulties. This is pure Trump.

If I had to guess I'd say it's because the other candidates are ideological hard liners but Kavanaugh is a toady, which is what Trump really wants. Finding someone who could get confirmed who would also discard his or her dignity to praise Trump isn't easy.

I was wondering the same thing. The only thing that makes sense is his judicial opinions regarding indicting a sitting potus.

I mean, they might withdraw him. It's been less than a day since the accusation was non-anonymized. If it was going to happen, it would not have happened by now.

He was a known perjurer when he was first nominated; I think his views on the 'unitary executive' or whatever nonsensical gibberish he appeals to—your first option—is correct:

This implies that conservatives favor sex offenders and perjurers. That can't be true, can it?

Not saying he should be confirmed or should have been nominated, but simply withdrawing his nomination now would reasonably be seen as abandoning him to the wolves with his reputation destroyed. You at least have to give him a chance to say his piece.

The longer the deliberation takes, the lower the probability of confirmation. Second nominees fail confirmation at higher than expected rates. https://dspace.mit.edu/handle/1721.1/18152 …

There are other reasons: to send the message that they, and they alone, decide what is acceptable, and who matters & who doesn’t. To normalize abhorrent behavior To enforce the primacy of loyalty to the tribe over all other principles — It’s why they stick with Trump

Someone I know accused you of sexual assault. Happened a while ago in someplace, but you know where and when. You must drop your Twitter account.

Kinda makes sense that a President close to indictment would pick a candidate with selected memory loss and zero ethics.

Why not bring accusation to Judicial Committee when they surfaced? What credible reason to wait, that doesn't involve seedy politics?

-They don't see the allegation as a sign that he's unfit for the bench. They certainly don't think multiple allegations of assault make a man unfit for the Oval Office.

The more obvious answer is that they want to ram this through as fast as possible. Midterms are coming up too fast to realistically start the process over without risking the whole thing. A new nominee doesn't give them any room for any more mistakes and they know it.

The POTUS above law thing doesn’t make sense. POTUS needs 5 POTUS above law votes, which assumes even the most moderate, conservative Justice or potential justice would agree. They already have the votes or never will.
