This might not translate v. well, but I recently asked a municipal politician how he feels about cooperating w/ opponents in order to deny xenophobes political influence. He said that his party has more in common w/ their direct opponents than w/ antidemocratic xenophobes. 1/2

To me, this was a clear statement about clearly identified principles. Despite their many differences, the two major opposing parties here have more in common w/ each other wrt fundamental principles than they have with the extremist fringe. The same SHOULD be true in the US. 2/2

Partially lost in translation, because of America’s first-past-the-post two party system. But the basic idea holds. When a fringe grows too powerful and threatens the system’s fundamental principles, everyone should unite against it until they can return to normal competition.
