Never thought Manafort would flip Not because of a pardon—possible state charges—but because he’s in bed with very serious people. The sort he fears could poison him with a nerve agent, get to him in prison, go after his family. I’m very curious how Mueller overcame those fears

Seems to me Manafort most threatens Americans, not Ukranians or Russians (who aren't already sanctioned, anyhow). What if Putin doesn't care if we spend the next two to seven years infighting over the slow burning and crumbling of this administration, leading up to Trump?

Maybe Putin would be delighted for that to happen because he's tired of Trump, who isn't able to come through for him on much of anything. So if Putin's new #1 benefit is chaos, letting Manafort spill his guts only helps.

All that makes sense. I think it’s more likely accurate than not. But would you bet your life on it? Would you bet your kids lives? Maybe you’re the next Sergei Skripal. Maybe not. My point is the fear is reasonable, and Mueller would’ve had to overcome it.
