Never thought Manafort would flip Not because of a pardon—possible state charges—but because he’s in bed with very serious people. The sort he fears could poison him with a nerve agent, get to him in prison, go after his family. I’m very curious how Mueller overcame those fears

He’s still facing a lot of prison. Either way, that doesn’t assuage the other fears.

I doubt the Kremlin cares what happens to their moronic asset; they've been exposed now for years and probably think it's comical how Republicans are protecting them. The Kremlin doesn't want to *run* America—it wants to *break* America: Trump defended to bitter end wd be fine.

Yes, Russian gov’s main goal re: US is disruption. But they went after Skripal, even though he wasn’t a threat. Maybe they wouldn’t care about Manafort. But would you bet your life on that? Would you bet your kids lives?

I would if I'd been told by the Kremlin that turning state's evidence was what *they* wanted. Not sure why Skripal was targeted—info he was providing the British/West? petty revenge?—; the attack is evidence that there was some reason important to the Kremlin.

Seems to me Manafort most threatens Americans, not Ukranians or Russians (who aren't already sanctioned, anyhow). What if Putin doesn't care if we spend the next two to seven years infighting over the slow burning and crumbling of this administration, leading up to Trump?

Maybe Putin would be delighted for that to happen because he's tired of Trump, who isn't able to come through for him on much of anything. So if Putin's new #1 benefit is chaos, letting Manafort spill his guts only helps.

All that makes sense. I think it’s more likely accurate than not. But would you bet your life on it? Would you bet your kids lives? Maybe you’re the next Sergei Skripal. Maybe not. My point is the fear is reasonable, and Mueller would’ve had to overcome it.

Had the same thought. Mueller had to convince Manafort that his family would be safe from Putin's goons -- a tough sale.

He was #1 on my dead pool just above Cohen. I had Manafort out the window of Trump Tower and Cohen disappeared into a shallow hole in the Meadowlands.
